On behalf of the editorial board, I am delighted to present you this year second edition of AFOMP PULSE, an official newsletter of Asia-Oceania Federations of organization for Medical Physics, Volume.16 issue.2.
This issue is presented with lots of professional information of AFOMP activities such as official’s messages and ExCom accomplishments, synopsis of meet the expert’s interview, did you know- marvellous science in action?, professional and scientific articles, Editor’s choice articles in AFOMP journals, PhD abstracts, MCQs, NMO activities and professional news and updates and many other common interesting news on Medical Physics profession for the last six months in the AFOMP regions.
The International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP), representing medical physicists in over 80 countries, established November 7th, the birthdate of Marie Sklodowska-Curie, as the International Day of Medical Physics (IDMP). The goal is to increase global awareness of medical physicists to the public and highlight professional commitment in supporting patients and healthcare professionals. This year theme of IDMP2024 is: “Inspiring the Next Generation of Medical Physicists“. The need for this theme is important and timely, as it is not only a professional obligation, but also a societal need globally.
Inspiring next-generation of medical physicists can begin with school education. Early exposure through outreach programs like school visits, hospital and lab tours and science camps can ignite students’ interest in science of physics. Introducing medical physics at the undergraduate physics level and encouraging summer research projects in hospitals, gives students first-hand experience of working in healthcare system and demonstrates the real-world impact of medical physics on patients’ lives.
Experienced medical physicists can provide valuable insights, guidance and support to students and early-career professionals through internships, residencies, and mentorship programs. Scholarships and fellowships promote diversity and inclusion by making education accessible to underrepresented groups. Workshops, conferences, and online courses keep young professionals updated on advancements in the field.
Networking facilitates idea exchange and collaboration, allowing professionals to combine expertise for greater impact. Partnerships among academia, industry, and research organizations offer young professionals opportunities to engage in innovative research and shape the future of medical physics.
Highlighting accomplishments and raising public awareness will keep the medical physics profession strong and diverse and capable of meeting the needs of patients worldwide. Let’s celebrate IDMP 2024 with enthusiasm for inspiring the next generation across AFOMP regions.
Before IDMP2024, let’s meet at AOCMP 2024 congress in Penang, Malaysia this October.
