PN Krishnamurthy Memorial AFOMP Young Achiever Award

Introduction: Mr. P. N. Krishnamurthy, an outstanding nuclear scientist, academic and pioneer in radiation protection field was born on 12th July 1927. After obtaining his M.Sc. Degree, he joined Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) initially as a research student and later continued as a research assistant. He took over Radiological Measurements Laboratory (RML) in 1959, as its head and led the Directorate of Radiation Protection (DRP) set up in 1963 to consolidate the radiation protection programme nationwide. He also served as a Consultant at IAEA in the Division of Health Safety and Waste Disposal.

Krishnamurthy’s pioneering efforts with the support from WHO, lead to starting of postgraduate medical physics education in BARC, Mumbai, one of the first in Asia – Pacific, leading to Diploma in Radiological and hospital physics.

During 1964-66, he assisted Dr Homi Bhabha in the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Cabinet. He was associated with manpower development and in upgrading of existing training programme. He was the first Member Secretary of Atomic Energy Regulatory Board [AERB] and established it on firm footing. Krishnamurthy passed on 16th November 2009. He was an excellent person who did remarkable efforts in the establishment of AERB and radiation protection domain in the region.

AFOMP is proud of his contribution and in his memory the “PN Krishnamurthy memorial AFOMP Young Medical Physicists Innovation award” is started. AFOMP thanks his family for the consent and support.
