AFOMP Secretary-General’s Message

Dear colleagues,

I would like to draw your attention to the recent initiatives by the International Organizations of Medical Physics (IOMP) aimed at nurturing young medical physicists. The IOMP has established the ‘Emerging Medical Physicists Hub (EMPHub)’ and announced the theme of the International Day of Medical Physics (IDMP) 2024 as “Inspiring the Next Generations of Medical Physicists.” These initiatives highlight the global medical physics community’s focus on supporting early-career medical physicists.

AFOMP fully supports these global initiatives and are establishing the AFOMP Early Career Medical Physicist Subcommittee. This inclusive platform encourages open communication and trust among young medical physicists. It aims to empower them to develop strong scientific and research capabilities, as well as essential soft skills aligned with leadership values. Additionally, it serves as a global network for young medical physicists to support each other.

Timely communication between AFOMP and national member organizations (NMOs) is of utmost importance. I kindly urge all NMOs to update the contact details of their current officers and delegates to AFOMP via the online form (https://forms.gle/uearzpCfy3Sco1JYA). Additionally, we are formalising the AFOMP Publication Committee to advance medical physics in the AFOMP region. This committee will provide regular newsletters to all members covering AFOMP activities and other topics of interest and will manage information on the AFOMP webpage.

Our continuous efforts to elevate professional standards through educational activities and enhance visibility via our website and social media outreach have made AFOMP relevant in the region. In addition to the AFOMP monthly webinars and webinar school, we are launching the Industrial Webinar Series this month to provide updates on technological advancements and practical clinical experiences from field experts.

I am excited to welcome you in person to the upcoming Asia-Oceania Congress of Medical Physics 2024, from October10th to 13th, in Penang, Malaysia, the Pearl of the Orient. This beautiful island will host the congress in George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We are working hard to bring you a high-quality scientific meeting combined with remarkable cultural and gastronomic experiences that Penang has to offer.

Thank you for your dedication to shaping our profession in the Asia-Oceania region. Together we learn, serve and contribute!

Yours sincerely,

Dr. Aik Hao Ng
Secretary-General, AFOMP
