Better Healthcare Technology Foundation

Greetings to members of AFOMP,

The Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM) recently launched a new entity named: the Better Healthcare Technology Foundation.

The Better Healthcare Technology Foundation has its own separate Board for governance purposes and the agreed aims are to:

  • support initiatives in physics, engineering and associated sciences in medicine that engender new technology for higher quality techniques and better outcomes of patient care;
  • seek a collaborative arrangement between researchers and providers to work on innovative projects that fast-track tomorrow’s healthcare techniques today; and
  • support physics, engineering or other associated science initiatives in medicine that lead to innovative new techniques or technology that directly benefit patients in Australian, New Zealand or Asia Pacific (APAC) hospitals.

Many of you will be aware of how, for many years, Australian and New Zealand (ANZ) medical physicists have visited Asian Hospitals under the auspices of either the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) or the ACPSEM, Asia Pacific Special Interest Group (APSIG).

These visits provided expert lectures and professional assistance in nuclear medicine, radiology, radiotherapy and radiation protection. We have continued to seek initiatives that continue to provide that strong support.

The Better Healthcare Technology  (BHT) Foundation has just established a brand new, exciting initiative that all Asian medical physicists can join in and benefit.

The Foundation has developed a website named:

www.betterhealthcaretechnology.org.

Collaborative Activity

Through the use of the BHT website, the Foundation aims to support work initiatives today that progress to tomorrow’s techniques.

The betterhealthcaretechnology.org website is designed to provide an open forum and information service for the public, industry and medical professionals. It’s a public site for everyone to use. There are no barriers to register in betterhealthcaretechnology.org and it’s free.

Subscribers are able to participate collaboratively in multidisciplinary activities covering a wide range of focus areas in the field of physics, engineering and associated sciences applied to better healthcare.

Scope

The website is based on three main sections:

  1. Patient and community information;
  2. Asia-Pacific Special Interest Group Activities; and
  3. Professional Collaboration;

The articles are tailored to suite the requirements for these three groups.

But the overall scope is designed to provide articles on modern technology and techniques applied to diagnostic and therapeutic methods with high quality outcome for patient care. Contributors are also encouraged to provide articles on what may be trends of new techniques and technology on the horizon.

Latest News and Blogs

As well as building a stronger collaboration between allied health professionals in Australian, New Zealand and Asian countries, the BHT website wants to engage the general public with health professionals and provide an efficient information pipeline to members of the public, our patients, donors and volunteers.

This is achieved by posting on the website ‘Latest News’ articles and blogs to subscribed website members. The depth and breadth of the scientific material will grow as new items are published for your interest.

The website is at present seeking to establish special multidisciplinary ‘focus groups’ wishing to collaborate on some of the near future areas, such as:

  • Adaptive radiotherapy;
  • Artificial intelligence (many specialties);
  • Biomarkers (surgery and imaging);
  • Image resolution and fusion;
  • Targeted radiotherapies (radiopharmacy);

These are exciting areas of development. Skills and knowledge of these R&D teams, overlap and there’s a great need for a suitable communicating media – betterhealthcaretechnology.org offers that potential.

To our Asian professional colleagues, I am pleased to welcome you to join
